Year 4  Newsletter

Year 4 newsletter – Autumn Term

We are looking forward to starting the new school year and to working with the children again in Year 4.

Our focuses for this term will be ‘Gadgets and Gizmos’ for Science, which will explore how electricity works and how the human ear processes sound. In addition, the Theme focus will be ‘Birmingham – Live it! Love it!’, linking to the history of Birmingham and opportunities to learn about Shakespeare and his famous plays.

PE will take place on Tuesdays, so please ensure that PE kits are in school at the start of every week. At specific times, the timetable may change, due to activities such as Forest School, so children need to keep PE kits in school during the week.

During this term, the children will also have the opportunity to consolidate learning from their previous year, linking to the key core areas:

Guided reading – We will be focusing on a range of texts to develop the children’s reading skills. Some of these texts may link to Electricity and Shakespeare.

Literacy – We will be focusing on writing a range of texts, linking to different genres, as well as consolidating knowledge of spellings and sentence structures each week.

Numeracy – Our first focus number and place value, linking to the four operations and the written methods.

Science – We will begin to learn about electricity, linking to appliances, which use electricity, as well as how circuits are made. Also, children will research about famous scientists and their inventions.

Spelling tests will be carried out once a week, in literacy groups and homework will be handed out on a Friday, including the weekly spellings to practice. Homework will then need to be handed in by Wednesday.

We look forward to the upcoming year and having the opportunity to support your child’s learning.
