Year 4 newsletter – Summer Term 2019

Firstly, thank you for all of your continued support this year. We hope all children have enjoyed the range of activities Y4 have taken part in during the autumn and spring terms.

Our focus for this term will be ‘Chocolate’, linking to our previous work on the rainforest, as well as where chocolate originated from and how chocolate is created today. This also provides children with the opportunity to taste a range of chocolate and to evaluate different chocolate packaging. In addition, Y4 will learn about the Aztec and Mayan history, through exploring food, clothing, housing and other aspects of their lives.

PE will continue to take place on Tuesdays, so please ensure that PE kits are in school at the start of every week. At specific times, the timetable may change, due to activities such as Forest School, so children need to keep PE kits in school during the week.

During this term, the children will also have the opportunity to consolidate learning from the previous year, linking to the key core areas:

Guided reading – We will be focusing on a range of texts to develop the children’s reading skills. Some of these fiction and non-fiction texts may link to the rainforest, chocolate and Aztec history.

Literacy – We will be focusing on writing a range of texts, linking to different genres, as well as consolidating knowledge of spellings and sentence structures each week. Spelling tests will be carried out once a week, in literacy groups and homework will be handed out on a Friday, including the weekly spellings to practice. Homework will then need to be handed in by Wednesday.

Numeracy – Our focuses this term will be consolidating knowledge and application of the four operations, as well as recapping data handling and coordinates.

Music/Drama – Instrumental lessons will continue on Monday afternoons. If your child takes an instrument home to practise, can you please ensure they bring it back in for their lesson each week. Also, throughout this term, Y4 will continue to take part in workshops with the Birmingham Hippodrome, working on the arts and performance.

We look forward to continuing this year and having the opportunity to support your child’s learning.
