Year 1 Newsletter



Hello and welcome to Year One. We are really looking forward to working with you and your child.


Our topic is ‘It’s a Mystery’ and we will be learning about seasons and childhood.



In Maths we will be reading, writing and ordering numbers up to 50.

We will also be learning how to add and subtract numbers up to 20.

We will be learning our number bonds to 10/20 (different ways of making 20 e.g. 10 + 10 =20)


In PE we will be learning gymnastics, dance and games. Please make sure you have your correct PE kit each week.


We will have a big focus on reading this term and our first book is the Cops and Robbers.

We will be sequencing events, predicting what will happen next and describing how characters feel.


In Geography we will be learning about our school grounds.

In History we will be comparing our lives with the Victorians.

In Science we will be learning about the 4 seasons- with a focus on the weather, trees and animals.


In Literacy we will be learning how to write sentences with a capital letter and full stop.

We will be working on forming all letters neatly and correctly.

We will be learning how to spell all our Year One Common Exception words.

In phonics we will be working on Phase 3 and 4.


Homework is very important in year 1. We expect you all to complete your homework on time each week.

Your child will receive a homework book that will tell you which day of the week their homework will be due in.


In year 1 :

We always try our best.

We always follow instructions.

We are polite.


PE Day- Wednesday- please remember to bring your PE kit.

Forest School – Tuesday

Toast Money- Please ensure your child brings their money in a purse or wallet.
