Year 6 Newsletter

Year 6 Curriculum Newsletter Autumn 2018

We are looking forward to the upcoming Autumn term and have been encouraged by the excellent standards and behaviour of the children during their transition sessions.

In Year 6 next year, the children will be expected to have more responsibility and be role models for the rest of the school and we believe they will relish this opportunity. There will be lots of opportunities available come the Autumn term for the children to take on responsibilities for both the school as a whole and in their year group.

Our theme in the Autumn will be ‘Battles’, where we will be learning about both World Wars through literacy, history, geography and our topic sessions. In literacy, the children will work to produce a profile of writing to be assessed at the year’s conclusion. In numeracy, our focus will be number, the four operations and place value. In science, we will be learning about animals including humans, electricity and evolution. Across the year, we will be recapping all areas of science studied in primary school.

Children will have PE and Forest Schools on Wednesday afternoons. They will need to bring in their full PE kit (shorts, Greenholm PE top, trainers and pumps) and old clothes and wellingtons or boots.

Homework will generally be out on a Friday and be due in the following Wednesday.

Year 6 is a SATs year and we will be helping the children towards this across the year, although we recognise that this is not all Year 6 is about and there will be lots of other activities and opportunities for the children throughout the year. If you have any concerns about the SATs tests, please feel free to speak to any member of the Year 6 team.

Prior to SATs, we organise a ‘University Week’ for the Year 6 children during the Easter Holidays, where they attend school for revision and spend the afternoons participating in fun activities. Attendance is expected by all children and there is a reward for anyone who attends all four days.

Following the SATs, there will be a residential visit to Blackwell Court. More information will be provided on this later in the year.

We will endeavour to keep you updated on ongoings and changes throughout the year, but should you need to speak to a member of the Year 6 team, please do not hesitate to come and find us in the Jubilee Block.

We look forward to starting the new term in September and hope everyone has a fantastic summer.
