Year 6 Newsletter
Year 6 Curriculum Newsletter Spring 2018
We are looking forward to the upcoming spring term and have been encouraged by the great start many of the children have made to Year 6.
Our focus in the spring will be art and science, where we will be learning about forces and sketching techniques in our topic sessions. In literacy, the children will continue to work to produce a profile of writing to be assessed at the year’s conclusion. Our focus will be on writing reports about habitats, writing diaries about Titanic and narratives about Oliver Twist. In numeracy, our focus will be shape, space and measure as well as data handling. We will be recapping all of the skills learnt previously in both literacy and numeracy as we work towards SATs at the beginning of the summer term.
Children will continue to have PE and Forest Schools on Wednesday afternoons. They will need to bring in their full PE kit (shorts, Greenholm PE top, trainers and pumps) and old clothes and wellingtons or boots.
Homework will generally be given out on a Friday and be due in the following Wednesday. We have been pleased with how the children have worked with their topic homework, producing some very creative ideas from the World War 2 sheet.
As mentioned in the autumn term, Year 6 is a SATs year and we will be helping the children towards this across the year, although we recognise that this is not all Year 6 is about and there will be lots of other activities and opportunities for the children throughout the year. If you have any concerns about the SATs tests, please feel free to speak to any member of the Year 6 team. We will provide a timetable for parents closer to the time.
Prior to SATs, we organise a ‘University Week’ for the Year 6 children during the Easter Holidays, where they attend school for revision and spend the afternoons participating in fun activities. Attendance is expected by all children and there is a reward for anyone who attends all four days. This will run from Monday 15th April to Thursday 18th April 2019.
Following the SATs, there will be a residential visit to Blackwell Court. More information will be provided on this early in the spring term.
We will endeavour to keep you updated on ongoings and changes throughout the term, but should you need to speak to a member of the Year 6 team, please do not hesitate to come and find us in the Jubilee Block.
We look forward to welcoming the children back in the new year and hope everyone has a fantastic holiday.
