Art

Intent

At Greenholm Primary, we believe the arts are a vital part of a well-rounded education. They provide opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and communication, helping children explore their individuality while developing appreciation and evaluative skills. Art allows children to connect with the world around them, fostering curiosity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of different perspectives and cultures.

The Value of Art

Our starting point is the belief that Art enriches lives, empowering children to think critically, communicate effectively, and express their individuality. It fosters emotional resilience, creativity, and cultural awareness, inspiring pupils to see beauty and possibility in themselves and the world around them.

Rationale

Our Art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity and challenge pupils by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, create, and reflect. Through a progressive journey, children develop an understanding of art and design, exploring key artists and their impact across different times, cultures, and movements.

Art at Greenholm is more than a subject; it’s a way to ignite imagination and build resilience. Pupils learn to observe, analyze, and interpret art, connecting with the stories, emotions, and historical contexts behind each piece. They develop critical thinking skills, learning to ask thoughtful questions and make informed artistic choices.

Each unit begins with children observing and analyzing a piece of artwork linked to their theme. They discuss what they like, how they think the artist created it, and its impact. This analysis forms the foundation for their own creative journey, as pupils explore different media and master the techniques needed for their final piece. These experiences culminate in pupils creating their own work, drawing inspiration from what they’ve learned while expressing their unique vision.

Through art, children develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. They learn to embrace experimentation, take creative risks, and celebrate their efforts. This not only fosters a sense of pride in their work but also builds confidence, patience, and an appreciation for the value of perseverance.
