Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

At Greenholm Primary, our language curriculum equips children with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to become positive global citizens. Through enjoyable and interactive learning, we aim to spark curiosity and build confidence, helping children appreciate the importance of other languages in their future.

Modern Foreign Languages Rationale

Our language curriculum introduces children to French in a way that is engaging, practical, and aligned with their broader learning journey. By fostering creativity and encouraging curiosity, we inspire children to see language learning as an essential skill for understanding and connecting with the world.

Key Stage 1 and Reception

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, children are introduced to French through song, rhyme, and playful interactions. This approach develops their listening skills, builds familiarity with the sounds of the language, and lays a strong foundation for future learning.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, all children benefit from weekly French lessons delivered by a native French language expert. This ensures authentic pronunciation, cultural insights, and high-quality teaching. Lessons are dynamic and engaging, incorporating songs, rhymes, drama, role-play, and ICT-based activities. As pupils progress, they learn to speak, listen, and write in French, building vocabulary, grammar knowledge, and confidence in using the language.

Our curriculum is carefully planned to align with other subjects, creating meaningful connections between language learning and wider themes. For example, Year 5 pupils learn space-related vocabulary in French to complement their “To Infinity and Beyond” science topic. This cross-curricular approach deepens understanding and makes learning more relevant and memorable.

The Value of Language Learning

Language learning at Greenholm goes beyond vocabulary and grammar—it opens doors to new cultures, perspectives, and opportunities. By learning French, children develop a sense of curiosity about the world, confidence in trying new skills, and the foundations to become globally minded citizens who value diversity and communication.

Curriculum Impact

Children leave Greenholm with a solid foundation in French, including an understanding of how language works and the confidence to embrace new languages in the future. With the guidance of a native French speaker, they gain authentic skills and cultural awareness, preparing them for secondary education and fostering a lifelong appreciation of the importance of communication in an interconnected world.
