Behaviour at Greenholm Primary School

At Greenholm Primary School, our vision is simple: We want all of our children to be happy, confident, motivated, and ready for success. Key to achieving this vision is ensuring that every child is in a positive, supportive environment where they can grow and develop. Our Behaviour Policy plays a crucial role in creating this environment by promoting positive behaviour, addressing challenges constructively, and reinforcing the values that help achieve our vision.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

We believe that recognising and rewarding positive behaviour is essential in encouraging children to make thoughtful choices. Our approach includes:

  • Clear Expectations: We have established a set of core values that underpin our expectations:
    • Be Responsible
    • Be Kind
    • Be Respectful
    • Be Curious
    • Be Resilient
  • Positive Reinforcement: Children who consistently demonstrate these values are acknowledged through various means, including verbal praise, certificates, and the awarding of Dojo points. These points accumulate over time and can lead to various rewards.

Addressing Behavioural Challenges

While we strive to maintain a positive environment, we recognise that challenges may arise. Our approach to managing these situations includes:

  • De-escalation Strategies: We employ techniques to calm situations and help children reflect on their actions, aiming to prevent escalation and promote understanding.
  • Sanctions: When necessary, appropriate sanctions are applied to address misbehaviour. These are implemented consistently and fairly, always with the child’s well-being in mind.
  • Supportive Measures: For children who require additional support, we develop individualised plans to address specific needs.

The children are encouraged to remember the code and to act upon it. Naturally there are times when misbehaviour occurs and we use the code to help the children to reflect upon a different way of behaving. It helps us if the parents also remind their children about the code. We do inform parents if their child has been persistently misbehaving and work with parents and the child to support them in changing their behaviour. Golden time is used throughout the school as a way of celebrating and rewarding all children who are able to manage their behaviour appropriately.

Anti-Bullying

At Greenholm, we take a firm stance against bullying. While incidents are rare, we treat each case very seriously. We also ensure bullying is highlighted with children during Anti-Bullying week.

  • Clear Definition: Bullying is defined as an imbalance of power where the victim is unable to defend themselves, and the behaviour is deliberately hurtful, either physical or verbal, and repeated over time.
  • Prompt Action: Any reported incidents are thoroughly investigated by a senior leader to ensure an appropriate response.
  • Support for Victims: We provide support to those affected, ensuring they feel safe and heard.
  • Education: We educate all children about the importance of kindness, respect, and the impact of bullying through our curriculum and school activities.

Collaboration with Parents

We believe that a strong partnership with parents is vital in supporting positive behaviour. We encourage open communication and invite parents to:

  • Discuss any concerns or observations regarding their child’s behaviour.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop strategies that support their child’s development.
